Study sheds light on UV exposure in children

GREENVILLE N.C. (WNCT) – A new World Health Organization study showed that 80 percent of UV exposure happens before the age of 18.

Doctors said often times children playing outside don’t have any type of protection or sun glasses on. That can lead to eye sun burn, skin cancer, and cataracts.

Doctors said when trying to buy protective glasses, prices don’t necessarily matter.

“The more that you can get as far as protection is concerned, whether that be a poly-carbonic material, at least a material that has been coated with UV protection, the better off you’re going to be,” said Dr. Yen Nguyen with MyEyeDr.

Although the study found that most exposure occurs before the age of 18, people of any age are still at risk of having sun damage to their eye.

Doctors warn that you can still receive UV exposure even when it’s cloudy outside.
