GREENSBORO, N.C. -- May is healthy vision month. In honor of that, some optometrists are warning people about the dangers of using digital technology too much.

According to The Vision Council, more than 93 percent of adults spend more than two hours a day using smart phones, tablets and computers.

They say more than 60 percent of adults spend five or more hours on them.

Symptoms of over-use includes eye strain, dry eye and headaches things that could lead to chronic dry eye or blurry vision, but there are some steps we can take to protect ourselves.

“Reposition the computer monitor inferiorly  as our eyes do tend to come in and down when we focus, adjust the screen brightness to match the environment around the screen,” said Dr. Leslie Mazzarella, O.D., MyEyeDr.

Optometrists also recommend using the 20/20/20 rule, which means you should look 20 feet away or more for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
