FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS GENERAL
Why do I need an eye exam?
The American Optometric Association recommends that most people receive an eye exam every one to two years depending upon their age and health. Since many diseases of the eye do not demonstrate early significant symptoms, an annual eye exam is one of the most important diagnostic and preventative measures you can take to insure healthy vision.

For your convenience, we take walk-in appointments and offer weekend and evening hours. Although an appointment is not necessary, it is best to schedule one to ensure that you may be seen in an efficient manner and the needs of your busy schedule may be met. Why can't I read small print?
The ability to focus on print and objects within 16 to20 inches decreases with age.
The system that allows the eye to focus includes a muscle that controls the tension on fibers attached to the lens inside the eye.
As the muscle contracts, the shape of the lens changes. Age affects the entire system. Starting at about age 40until age 70,
the ability to focus diminishes.
That is why many people require reading glasses or bifocals at about 40 years of age and why the power of the reading
glasses or bifocal prescription gradually increases over time.
What are cataracts?
A cataract is a clouding that develops in the normally clear lens of the eye which prevents the lens from properly focusing light on the retina. Cataracts usually develop in both eyes although often at different rates. Some cataracts develop over a period of years, while others form rapidly in a few months.
What is glaucoma?
A condition caused by the increase of aqueous fluid in the eye resulting in increased intra ocular pressure that causes damage to the optic nerve. Symptoms may include tunnel vision, pain, blurred vision, halos around lights...or no signs at all . Glaucoma occurs most commonly in people over 40 and may result in blindness if not diagnosed and treated early in the course of the disease.

LASER VISION CORRECTION
How do I determine if I am a candidate for laser vision correction?
Schedule a complimentary consultation with our office to determine if you are a good candidate. You need to be over 18 years of age, and your glasses or contact lens prescription should not have changed in the last year. If you are pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive, you should not have laser vision correction at this time.
EYEGLASSES
Do I have to wear bifocals to read?
Bifocals are only one of the many options available to people who require additional prescription power for reading. Bifocals have two lens focal lengths -- distance (20 ft. and beyond) and reading (18-24 inches), with a noticeable line differentiating these two lens areas. The modern spectacle lens alternative to traditional bifocals is Progressive Additions Lenses. As the name indicates, the additional prescription power for reading becomes progressively stronger from the top of the lens to the bottom. This allows for the proper prescription power at every focal length between distance and reading. As a result, Progressive lenses provide the most natural vision of any multi focal lens -- without the line associated with traditional bifocals! Other alternatives to bifocal eyewear are contact lenses, either mono vision or multi focal lenses, or two separate pairs of eyeglasses, one for reading and one for distance vision. MyEyeDr. offers you a wide selection of Progressive lenses in order to custom fit you with the one that complements your lifestyle needs!
Can I eliminate the glare of headlights?
Definitely! Light from headlights reflects off many surfaces before it reaches your retina. Optical lenses are a highly reflective surface. While standard lenses reflect 8% of the light that reaches them, lenses treated with Anti-Reflective Coating transmit 99% of the light. When prescription or non-prescription lenses are treated with Anti-Reflective Coating, the glare from headlights is virtually eliminated which allows you to drive with greater confidence. Anti-Reflective lenses are also easier on your eyes during daytime conditions, helping to reduce glare and eye fatigue associated with bright lights and computer screens. With Anti-Reflective lenses, you can work or play in greater comfort. Recent technology of the Anti-Reflective coating has increased its durability, as well as reduced its tendency to smudge.
